The Chamber

OUR MISSION

The Iowa LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to drive economic growth, workplace equity, and community prosperity by advancing business practices that foster belonging, opportunity, and success for the LGBTQ+ and ally business community and all who are committed to building a stronger Iowa. To achieve these goals, we focus our efforts on four key pillars of service:

Economic & Workforce Development

Fueling Iowa’s future by empowering LGBTQ- and ally-owned businesses and individuals through funding and contract opportunities, business education, and essential resources. We’re committed to building an Iowa where talent thrives— where people choose to grow careers, launch businesses, and raise families in inclusive, opportunity-rich communities.

Support & Connection

Strengthening Iowa’s LGBTQ+ and ally business community by creating platforms for connection, visibility, and advocacy. Through events, storytelling, policy engagement, and resource-sharing, we foster an environment where businesses and individuals feel supported, valued, and empowered. By amplifying voices and cultivating meaningful relationships, we build a more inclusive Iowa rooted in shared success and belonging.

Educate & Lead

Equipping businesses and professionals with the knowledge and tools to lead confidently and drive meaningful change. Through expert-led programming, workshops, thought leadership, and storytelling that highlights the voices and journeys of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies, we foster a culture of continuous learning, connection, and innovation that strengthens Iowa’s economy and communities.

LGBT Business Enterprise® Certification

Facilitating business success through LGBTBE® Certification, a designation that opens doors to new economic opportunities. Certification through the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) enables LGBTQ-owned businesses to compete for contracts with corporate partners committed to inclusive supplier diversity. Certified businesses also gain access to exclusive training, mentorship, and development resources to help them grow and thrive.

OUR HISTORY

The Iowa LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce launched on October 18, 2023, after nearly five years of planning by dedicated community leaders. The idea emerged in 2018 during a Capital City Pride Speaker Series featuring Jonathan Lovitz of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). When asked why Iowa lacked an NGLCC affiliate, Jonathan highlighted the significant economic impact of LGBTQ-owned businesses and the need for representation.

At the time, Iowa was an unrepresented “black hole” on the NGLCC map, despite data showing the vital contributions of LGBTQ-owned businesses nationwide, with an estimated $1.7 trillion annual economic impact in 2016. Recognizing Iowa's estimated 6,000 LGBTQ-owned businesses, the Chamber was created to serve as a voice and resource for this thriving community.

OUR VISION

We envision a thriving, economically empowered, and visible LGBTQ and allied business community across Iowa that inspires and supports young professionals, entrepreneurs, and business owners. The Iowa LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and empowering its members through opportunities for marketing, networking, supplier diversity, and procurement. We strengthen community engagement, facilitate referral-based business growth, and offer programs like workshops and mentorship to develop business skills and expertise.

The Chamber works closely with Community and Corporate Partners, as well as civic leaders, to advocate for policies that promote equity and inclusion within Iowa’s business community. With representation across eight regional districts, led by dedicated regional coordinators, and a growing membership base, our vibrant network continues to empower small businesses, owners, and professionals in the LGBTQ and allied business community statewide.

OUR REACH

The Iowa LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce serves the entire state of Iowa. To provide more tailored support to its members, the Chamber operates through eight regional chapters, each addressing the unique characteristics and needs of its area. While united by the Chamber's core mission and pillars of service, these regions cater to distinct community engagement, advocacy, and business support requirements shaped by their local demographics, industries, and social environments. Each regional chapter will be led by a Regional Director (a board position) and supported by four committee leads specializing in Membership, Public Relations and Communications, Community Outreach, and Programming. This structure allows the Chamber to address the specific needs of each region effectively while staying aligned with its overarching mission.
